The authors deal with an infinite elastic band compressed along its unbounded direction, which gives rise to a continuous family of homogeneous configurations, parameterized by a compression rate \(\beta< 1\). One obtains thus asymptotically homogeneous localized deformations; these deformations are not due to localized imperfections, because the material is supposed to be homogeneous, isotropic and hyperelastic. The method used follows that developed by \textit{A. Mielke} [Hamiltonian and Lagrangian flows on center manifolds with applications to elliptic variational problems. Lecture Notes in Mathematics. 1489. Berlin etc.: Springer-Verlag. x (1991; Zbl 0747.58001)] for a band under traction; but Agmon's condition does not hold any more, so that the linearized problem cannot be analyzed as in Mielke's work.
