This paper deals with the problem of calculating the numerical index of a Banach space. It provides a result which allows to calculate the numerical index of the space as the limit of the numerical indices of an increasing sequence of subspaces whose union is dense and satisfies a geometric condition. Some examples of applications of the results are given.
