The authors propose to view as the universal \(C^*\)-algebra associated to any shift space [see \textit{B.\,P.\thinspace Kitchens}, ``Symbolic dynamics.\ One-sided, two-sided and countable state Markov shifts'' (Universitext; Berlin:\ Springer) (1998; Zbl 0892.58020)] the crossed product introduced by extending \textit{R.\,Exel}'s treatment of the Cuntz--Krieger algebra (associated to a finite state Markov subshift) in [Ergodic Theory Dyn.\ Syst.\ 23, 1773--1750 (2003; Zbl 1059.46050)]. They study various properties of their construction and compare it with other \(C^*\)-algebras arising in this context building on papers by Matsumoto, Carlsen and Matsumoto, and Carlsen. A nice account is given in the summary
