There is an investigation on self-assembly based algorithms for pattern recognition. A special aspect relies on the connection between self-assembly, neural networks and associative memories. In the section ``Pattern recognition in self-assembly'', an algorithm is developed and implemented. Further the relationship between self-assembly and place cell neural networks, as well as different similarities and differences are discussed. A large number of experiments are performed and there is an extensive presentation of results and conclusions.
