The author presents a direct criterion without involving the analysis of the linearized Hamiltonian vector field for stability and instability of the relative equilibria in the \(S^ 1\)-equivariant symplectic context and Poisson context with codimension one. He generalizes this to larger groups and gives some examples from classical mechanics and planar cooled rigid bodies.
