In [``Superstrings with torsion'', Nucl. Phys. B 274, No. 2, 253--284 (1986; \url{doi:10.1016/0550-3213(86)90286-5})], \textit{A. Strominger} proposed a system of equations for compactifications of superstring theories which satisfy the key physical requirement of $N=1$ supersymmetry. Some twenty years later \textit{J.-X. Fu} and \textit{S.-T. Yau} obtained in [J. Differ. Geom. 78, No. 3, 369--428 (2008; Zbl 1141.53036)] the first non-perturbative solution of Strominger system by using a Monge-Ampère equation on a compact $(n=2)$-dimensional Kähler manifold. \par In this paper, the Fu-Yau equation for general $n$ is expressed as a more standard complex Hessian-type equation and hence $C^0$, $C^2$ and $C^{2, \alpha}$ a priori estimates are obtained. This allows a simplified and more transparent derivation of Fu-Yau results of the case $n=2$ and a more clear picture of why their arguments does not work for higher dimensions.
