Let K be a linearized operator for an ideal magnetohydrodynamic system of equations in an axisymmetric region with perfectly conducting boundary: \[ K\xi =\text{grad}\{\gamma P(div \xi)+(\text{grad} P)\cdot \xi \}+B\times rot(rot(B\times \xi))-(rot B)\times rot(B\times \xi). \] The author proposes a method to determine the essential spectrum of K [see, for another method, \textit{J. Descloux} and \textit{G. Geymonat}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris Ser. A 290, 795-797 (1980; Zbl 0443.76096)], using the perturbation theory by compact operators around the ''freezing operator'' associated with K.
