The near octagon \(H_4\) is the incidence structure with the partitions of type \(2,2,2,2,2\) of a set of size \(10\) as points, and the partitions of type \(2,2,2,4\) as lines (and refinement as incidence). The authors determine all valuations (in the sense of the authors [Glasg. Math. J. 47, No. 2, 347--361 (2005; Zbl 1085.51009)]) of \(H_4\). As a consequence, \(H_4\) has unique isometric full embeddings into the dual polar spaces DQ(8,2) and DH(7,4).
