Let A and B be \(n\times n\) matrices over a field F. Denote by i(A) the number of invariant polynomials of A which are different from 1. The main result of this paper yields the answer to a question posed in a joint paper by the reviewer, \textit{E. Marques de Sá} and \textit{J. Dias da Silva} [Linear Multilinear Algebra 5, 119-128 (1977; Zbl 0367.15010)]: if \(i(A)+i(B)\leq n+t\) (t\(\in \{1,...,n\})\) then there exists a matrix X such that \(i(XAX^{-1}+B)\leq t\). There are some exceptions, all determined by the author, when \(F=\{0,1\}\). The proof is rather intricate.
