First of all, the author studies the blow-up problem for abstract nonlinear equations of the form \[ u''(t)+ \delta u'(t)+ \partial\varphi \bigl(u(t) \bigr)-\partial \psi \bigl(u(t) \bigr) =0,\;t\geq 0 \quad u(0)= u_0,\;u'(0)= u_1 \] in a Hilbert space \(H\). Here \(\partial \varphi\) and \(\partial \psi\) are single valued subdifferentials of lower semicontinuous convex functions \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) from \(H\) to \((-\infty,\infty)\) with \(\varphi, \psi\neq +\infty\) and \(\delta>0\). As a special case, the author considers dissipative nonlinear wave equations (with strong solution blowing up in finite time) as well as the non-dissipative case. The author uses the blow-up results for some ordinary differential inequalities of second order and the monotonicity of some Rayleigh type quotients.
