The authors consider the effects of stiffness, damping, backlash, and loading on the dynamic effects of a gear pair. Stochastic effects and transition to chaos are a focus of the analysis. It is concluded that chaos is more likely found in a gearing system under light loading. The analysis is based upon a model of a gear pair with a spring and damper in the mesh. The paper should be of interest to transmission designers and analysts working with high-speed mechanisms, and with gearing systems in general.
