The authors study compact hyper-Kähler manifolds \(X\) which admit an anti-holomorphic involution \(\sigma\) with respect to a fixed complex structure \(I\). On a hyper-Kähler manifold there is a natural action of the unit quaternions \(\mathbb H\) on the tangent bundle \(TX\). Fix a standard basis \((I, J, K)\) of \(\mathbb H\). In this setting, the authors prove two main results. First, if \(\sigma\) acts non-trivially on the symplectic form of \(I\), then the action of \(\sigma\) on \(X\) has a fixed point locus which is special Lagrangian with respect to \(I\) and \(K\), and which is complex Lagrangian with respect to \(J\). The second main result is that there exist complex Lagrangian submanifolds with respect to \(I\) which are not the fixed point locus of any anti-holomorphic involution with respect to one of the other complex structures.
