A point \( m\in {\mathbb Z}^2\setminus \{0\}\) is called a best approximation for \(\langle \alpha,\cdot \rangle \) (\( \alpha\in {\mathbb R}^2 \), \(\langle , \rangle \) the usual scalar product in \( {\mathbb R}^2\)) if \[ \parallel \langle \alpha, m \rangle \parallel< \parallel \langle \alpha, m^\prime \rangle \parallel \] for every \( m^\prime\in {\mathbb Z}^2\setminus \{0\} \) such that \(\mid m^\prime\mid <\mid m\mid \) and \[ \parallel \langle \alpha, m \rangle \parallel\leq \parallel \langle \alpha, m^\prime \rangle \parallel \] for every \( m^\prime\in {\mathbb Z}^2\setminus \{0\} \) such that \(\mid m^\prime\mid =\mid m\mid \), where \( \parallel \cdot\parallel\) denotes the distance to the nearest integer and \( \mid \cdot \mid \) the Euclidean norm. The authors prove: Given an arbitrary non-increasing function \(\psi: {\mathbb R}_+\to {\mathbb R}_+ \), \(\psi(1)\leq (9\gamma)^{-1},\gamma=\frac{18}{9-\sqrt{2}}\), there exists \(\alpha\in {\mathbb R}^2\) such that all best approximations \(m_k\) for \(\langle \alpha,\cdot \rangle \) satisfy \[ \psi(\mid m_k\mid)-4\gamma \psi(\mid m_k\mid)^2<\parallel \langle \alpha, m_k \rangle \parallel\cdot \mid m_k\mid^2\leq \psi(\mid m_k\mid)+\gamma \psi(\mid m_k\mid)^2. \] There is a continuum of such \(\alpha\).
