Let \(X\) be a paracompact \(p\)-space and consider the space \(\exp(X)\) of all compact subsets of \(X\) equipped with the Vietoris topology and its subspace \(\exp_3(X)\) consisting of all subsets of \(X\) having at most 3 points. It is first shown that, if \(\exp_3(X)\) is hereditarily countably paracompact, then \(X\) is metrizable. This fact is then used to prove that, if \({\mathcal F}\): \({\mathcal P}\to{\mathcal P}\) is any normal functor of degree \(\geq 3\) from the category \({\mathcal P}\) of paracompact \(p\)-spaces and perfect mappings into itself and \({\mathcal F}(X)\) is hereditarily countably paracompact, then \(X\) is metrizable. Reviewer's remark: For a good introduction to the rich theory of normal functors see \textit{A. Teleiko} and \textit{M. Zarichnyi} [Mathematical Studies Monograph Series. 5. Lviv: VNTL Publishers. 263 p. (1999; Zbl 1032.54004)]]. | |||
