We review a recent NATO advanced research workshop entitled ''Testing nonlinear dynamics,'' held 6-9 June 1983 at Haverford College. Considerable progress has been made recently in demonstrating that strange attractors actually exist in experiments, in measuring their properties (dimension and Lyapunov exponents), and in correlating dynamical behavior with specific physical attributes. Experiments and models for many different systems were discussed: fluids, chemical reactions, lasers, solid state devices, and biological and astronomical systems.
