The authors introduce a new definition of nonpositive curvature in metric spaces, based on comparing triangles in the metric space in question with triangles in the Euclidean plane. The novelty is that the metric space does not necessarily admit geodesics. A variant of the definition can be applied to discrete metric spaces.
