Let \(\mathfrak g\) be a finite-dimensional complex Lie algebra. The minimal dimension of a faithful \(\mathfrak g\)-module is denote by \(mu(\mathfrak g)\). This invariant is finite by Ado's theorem. The current paper describes a new method to determine faithful representations of small dimension for nilpotent Lie algebras, based on quotients in the universal enveloping algebra. Using this construction they obtain new upper bounds on \(mu(\mathfrak g)\) for these Lie algebras.
