The main result of this interesting paper is an abstract good-\(\lambda\) inequality that allows to consider three self-improving properties related to oscillation estimates in more context. This version of good-\(\lambda\) inequality allows to define and consider general local oscillations and derive applications to some self-improvements properties. First using the dyadic analysis the authors prove the abstract local good-\(\lambda\) inequality on Euclidean spaces. In consequence they can prove higher integrability properties for functions belonging to the so-called John-Nirenberg spaces. Moreover easy proofs of some of the self-improving properties of the generalizations of Poincaré inequalities studied earlier by by \textit{B. Franchi} et al. [J. Funct. Anal. 153, No. 1, 108--146, Art. No. FU973175 (1998; Zbl 0892.43005)], and by \textit{P. MacManus} and \textit{C. Pérez} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 1998, No. 2, 101--116 (1998; Zbl 0903.46029)] are presented. Finally, it is shown that a weak Gurov-Reshetnyak condition implies higher integrability with asymptotically sharp estimates. In all this cases they consider both the classical and the general local oscillations. In the second part of the paper the authors prove the abstract good-\(\lambda\) inequality for spaces of homogeneous type. Once more the applications to the John-Nirenberg spaces, the Franchi-Pérez-Wheeden self-improvement and the weak Gurov-Reshetnyak condition are considered.
