The definition of a Higgins commutator in semi-abelian categories is a generalization of the origin definition in varieties of \(\Omega\)-groups. If \(\kappa :K@>>>X\) and \(\lambda :L@>>> X\) are subobjects then a Higgins commutator is a special subobject of \([K,L]_X\). The NH-condition says that the Higgins commutator of normal subobjects of \(X\) is also a normal subobject of \(X\). The validity of the NH-condition in semi-abelian categories is characterized. In particular, the validity of NH-condition for special varieties of algebras of finitary types is proved. The relation of the NH-condition and the SH-condition (Smith commutator and Huq commutator vanish together) is studied. Many examples of semi-abelian categories illustrating validity or non-validity of studied conditions are presented.
