The paper is an invited lecture that the author gave at XXXII Symposium on Mathematical Physics, Toruń, 2000. It discusses the construction of recursion operators and Virasoro symmetry algebras for field systems and lattice systems, based on the idea developed in [\textit{M. Gürses, A. Karasu} and \textit{V. V. Sokolov}, J. Math. Phys. 40, No. 12, 6473--6490 (1999; Zbl 0977.37038)]. The basic idea of construction was also used to analyze Virasoro algebra of Lax operators associated with symmetries of field and lattice systems [for example, see \textit{M. Błaszak}, Multi-Hamiltonian theory of dynamical systems, Texts and Monographs in Physics, Springer-Verlag, Berlin (1996; Zbl 0912.58017) and \textit{W. X. Ma} and \textit{B. Fuchssteiner}, J. Math. Phys. 40, No. 5, 2400--2418 (1999; Zbl 0984.37097)]. A couple of concrete examples are furnished to illustrate the whole algorithm of construction.
