Dynamics on the PSL(2,\(\mathbb{C}\))-character variety of a compression body (Q740537): Difference between revisions

The article under review studies the \(Out(\pi_1(M))\)-action on the \(PSL(2,\mathbb C)\)-character variety \(\mathcal X(M)\) of a nontrivial compression body \(M\) without toroidal boundary components. Recall that the \(PSL(2,\mathbb C)\)-character variety is the GIT (geometric invariant theory) quotient of \(Hom(\pi_1(M),PSL(2,\mathbb C))\) by conjugation. It is well known that the conjugacy classes of discrete and faithful representations form a subset \(AH(M)\) of \(\mathcal X(M),\) on the interior of which \(Out(\pi_1(M))\) acts properly discontinuously. In the paper under review, the author finds a strictly larger domain of discontinuity \(\mathcal{SS}(M)\) than \(AH(M),\) consisting of the so called \textit{separable-stable} representations. In particular, she shows the following \noindent{ Theorem 1} Let \(M\) be a nontrivial, hyperbolizable compression body without toroidal boundary components. Then, there exists an open, \(Out(\pi_1(M))\)-invariant subset \(\mathcal{SS}(M),\) called the set of separable-stable representations, in \(\mathcal X(M),\) containing the interior of \(AH(M)\) as well as points on \(\partial AH(M),\) such that the action of \(Out(\pi_1(M))\) is properly discontinuous on \(\mathcal SS(M).\) It would be very interesting to know whether the invariant subset \(\mathcal SS(M)\) the author found is the maximum domain of discontinuity.
