In this paper the authors study symmetric spaces of compact type in which all root multiplicities are even, and prove a Paley-Wiener theorem. Their proof depends heavily on the assumption that all root multiplicities are even and it is not possible to generalize it to obtain local Paley-Wiener theorems for general compact symmetric spaces. However, some modifications can be done in the proof in order to solve the problem for arbitrary root systems with positive even-valued multiplicity functions which are not geometric. This is done by the same authors in another paper of this journal. The authors also obtain three independent new proofs of the strong Huygens' principle for a suitable constant shift of the wave equation on odd-dimensional spaces in their class of symmetric spaces.
