The author proves that the nonrationality of the generic cubic fourfold follows from a conjecture on the nondecomposability in the direct sum of nontrivial polarized Hodge structures of the polarized Hodge structure on transcendental cycles on a projective surface. The idea is that: 1. If the general cubic \(X\) is rational then the polarized Hodge structure on the 4-th cohomologies of \(X\) contains as direct summands the polarized Hodge structures on the transcendental 2-cycles of the surfaces \(C_i\) that appear as centers of blowups in a Hironaka decomposition of a birationality \(X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^4\). 2. For at least one of the surfaces \(C_i\) the Hodge structure on the transcendental cycles decomposes into a nontrivial sum of Hodge substructures.
