In an earlier paper [J. Reine Angew. Math. 641, 177-202 (2010; Zbl 1203.20009)] the authors constructed a \(p\)-basic set of the alternating group \(A_n\), for any \(n\geq 1\) and any prime \(p>2\). In the paper under review, they use similar ideas in order to construct a 2-basic set for \(A_n\), i.e. a set of irreducible complex characters of \(A_n\) whose restrictions to the set of elements of odd order in \(A_n\) form a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-basis of the group of virtual 2-Brauer characters of \(A_n\).
