Consider the Hilbert space \(L^2({\mathbb R})\) and let \(H_0\) be the selfadjoint operator of multiplication by the variable, i.e., \((H_0 f)(x) = xf(x)\). For \(u\in L^2({\mathbb R})\), consider the rank one perturbation of \(H_0\) defined by \(H_u f = H_0 f + \langle u, f\rangle u\). It is well-known that the wave operators \(\Omega_\pm = s- \lim_{t\to\pm\infty} e^{iH_u}t e^{-iH_0t}\) exist and are asymptotically complete. The authors of the present paper propose a rather explicit formula for the wave operators. This formula is proved for \(u\) that satisfies some smoothness assumptions. These assumptions are satisfied if \(u\) is Hölder continuous with exponent \(\alpha > 1/2\). As a corollary, a topological version of Levinson's theorem for this model is proved.
