A complex symmetric space is a homogeneous space under the action of a complex semisimple Lie group, whose isotropy Lie subalgebra is the fixed point set of a holomorphic involution. The goal of this paper is to construct a Ricci flat Kähler metric on complex symmetric spaces \(G/H\) of rank 2. The idea is to use a method developed by \textit{G. Tian} and \textit{S. T. Yau} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 3, No. 3, 579--609 (1990; Zbl 0719.53041); Invent. Math. 106, No. 1, 27--60 (1991; Zbl 0766.53053)] to obtain complete Ricci flat Kähler metrics on non-compact manifolds by viewing them as the complement of a smooth divisor supporting the anticanonical divisor in a Fano manifold. To this purpose, a complex symmetric space \(G/H\) is viewed as an open orbit in its wonderful compactification \(X\) (even though it is not always Fano). The boundary divisor is a simple normal crossing divisor, with two irreducible components \(D_1\) and \(D_2\), supporting the anticanonical divisor for \(X\). Each component divisor \(D_i\), for \(i=1,2\), is a two-orbits manifold with one open orbit which is a homogeneous fibration over a generalized flag manifold with a complex symmetric space as fiber. The approach is that of searching for an asymptotically conical metric with singular cone at infinity by taking a line bundle over a blow-down \(\check D_2\) of the boundary divisor \(D_2\), which is a singular Kähler-Einstein manifold (necessarily positive, by the Tian-Yau theorem), and then desingularize such cone by using the boundary divisor \(D_1\) and the Stenzel metric of the fibers of its open orbit. It is proved that the above singular \(\mathbb Q\)-Fano variety \(\check D_2\) admits a (singular) Kähler-Einstein metric if and only if it is \(K\)-stable (Theorem 1.2). Then the main result of the paper is the following theorem. Theorem. There exists a Ricci flat metric with the above boundary behaviour on the following indecomposable rank two spaces: \[\mathrm{Sp}_8/(\mathrm{Sp}_4\times \mathrm{Sp}_4),\qquad G_2/\mathrm{SO}_4,\qquad G_2\times G_2/G_2,\qquad \mathrm{SO}_5\times \mathrm{SO}_5/\mathrm{SO}_5,\] -- on each Hermitian symmetric space, there is a Ricci flat metric for one choice of ordering, which corresponds to the Biquard-Gauduchon's metrics, -- on the following Hermitian symmetric spaces, the other choice of ordering of divisors produces a Ricci flat metric with a different asymptotic cone \[\mathrm{SO}_n/\mathrm{S}(\mathrm{O}_2\times \mathrm{O}_n), \quad n\ge 5,\qquad \mathrm{SL}_5/\mathrm{S}(\mathrm{GL}_2\times \mathrm{GL}_3).\] In some cases, the above approach yields two Ricci-flat metrics with different asymptotic behaviour, while it does not work for the symmetric space \(\mathrm{SL}_2/\mathrm{SO}_3\).
