The commutator formalism developed by \textit{I. M. Krichever} and \textit{D. H. Phong} [International Press Surv. Differ. Geom., Suppl. J. Differ. Geom. 4, 239--313 (1998; Zbl 0931.35148)] presents the unified approach for the construction of symplectic forms for 1D integrable equations. The goal of the reviewed article is to review this approach in the case of 1D periodic cubic Schrödinger equation and to extend it to the scattering case.
