The authors present a weak Galerkin finite element method for second order elliptic problems. They introduce a numerical approximation technique for partial differential equations based on a new interpretation of differential operators and their approximations. An optimal order error estimate in both a discrete \(H^1\) and \(L^1\) norms for the second order elliptic problem related to weak Galerkin finite element solution is given. For the weak Galerkin approximation superconvergence is observed.
