The main result of the paper says that the unitary Grassmannians associated to a generic hermitian form are 2-incompressible and that the essential parts of their motives are indecomposable. The main application the computation of the \(J\)-invariant of the quadratic form attached to the generic hermitian form and therefore the minimal value of \(J\)-invariant of a quadratic form arising from a hermitian one (of a fixed dimension); here is used the original notion of \(J\)-invariant introduced by A. Vishik. Another application is the computation of the modulo 2 reduced Chow ring of a unitary Grassmannians in terms of the Chow ring of the orthogonal Grassmannians.
