The Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra is constructed analogously to the Murray-von Neumann semigroup by encoding the order among positive elements (instead of just projections). If the C*-algebra is stably finite, then the Cuntz semigroup recovers the \(K_0\)-group. On the other hand, the Cuntz semigroup does not recover the \(K_1\)-group -- even for well-behaved C*-algebras. To remedy this, the paper introduces a variant of the Cuntz semigroup that encodes the \(K_0\)- and the \(K_1\)-group of the C*-algebra. This new invariant behaves well with respect to inductive limits and explicit computations are given in a number of cases.
