The authors deal with the solution theory (i.e. existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data) for an ordinary differential equation with delay and memory terms. First the concept of the time derivative is introduced as a normal operator in an appropriate Hilbert space. This concept allows the authors to develop a new approach to the solution theory which covers integro-differential equations, neutral differential equations and general differential equations. Also, the causality of solutions is studied and the applicability of the results is discussed in the last section of the paper.
