The authors prove a result which confirms that Spivak's intuition about generic metrics is correct for compact Riemannian \(n\)-manifolds with \(n\geq4\). [\textit{M. Spivak}, A comprehensive introduction to differential geometry. Vol. 1-5. 3rd ed. with corrections. Houston, TX: Publish or Perish (1999; Zbl 1213.53001)]. The main theorem proved in this paper is the following: Let \(M\) be a compact, smooth manifold of dimension at least 4. For any finite \(q\geq2\), the set of Riemannian metrics on \(M\) with no nontrivial immersed totally geodesic submanifolds contains a set that is open and dense in the \(C^q\)-topology.
