Tanaka's prolongation procedure of Takana structures, which generalizes the classical theory of prolongation of \(G\)-structures, is a very efficient method for the description of local invariants, the investigation of the automorphism group, and equivalence problems. In the present paper, the authors develop systematically an alternative constructive approach for Tanaka's prolongation procedure, based on the theory of quasi-gradations of filtered vector spaces, \(G\)-structures, and their torsion functions.
