The author studies a class of block operator matrices, arising particularly in the context of certain boundary control problems, and proves that these matrices can be characterized in terms of an associated boundary relation. This latter characterization was established by the same author in [\textit{S. Trostorff}, J. Funct. Anal. 267, No. 8, 2787--2822 (2014; Zbl 1461.47012)].
