Asymptotic properties of nonnegative solutions of the general porous medium equation in the slow diffusion and the limit diffusion cases are studied. Consider: \[ \partial_ tu=\Delta_ pu\quad\text{ in } Q=\Omega\times(0,\infty),\quad p>1,\quad m>0, \] \[ u^ m=0\quad\text{ on } \partial\Omega\times(0,\infty),\quad u(x,0)=u_ 0(x)\qquad \text{ in } \Omega; \] with \(u^ m_ 0\in C^ 1(\overline\Omega)\), \(u_ 0\geq(\not\equiv 0)\) in \(\Omega\), \(u_ 0=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(\Omega\) is a bounded arcwise connected open set of \(R^ N\) whose boundary \(\partial\Omega\) is \(C^ 2\); and, the \(p\)-Laplacian operator is \(\Delta_ pv=\text{div}(|\nabla v|^{p-2}\nabla v)\). Similar problems arise by modeling water infiltration through porous media in the turbulent regime. Under the slow diffusion hypothesis, \(m(p-1)>1\), the existence of a time ``\(T\)'' is established such that \(u^ m(x,t)\geq cd(x)\), \(\forall x\in\Omega\), \(\forall t\geq T\), (\(d\) is the distance from \(x\) to \(\partial\Omega\)). And, the estimate \(\|(1+t)^ \gamma u(.,t)- v\|_{L^ \infty}\leq c(1+t)^{-1}\), \(\forall t\geq 0\), where \(\gamma=1/[(p-1)m-1]\), and \(v^ m\) is the unique solution of the steady state problem: \[ -\Delta_ p\omega=\gamma\omega^{1/m},\quad \omega\geq 0\;\;(\not\equiv 0)\;\text{ in }\Omega,\quad \omega=0\;\text{ on } \partial \Omega. \] In the limit case \(m(p-1)=1\), the estimate \(\| e^{\lambda_ 1t}u(.,t)-v_ 1\|_{L^ \infty}\leq C\), \(\forall t\geq 0\) follows, where \(\lambda_ 1\) is the first eigenvalue of \(\Delta_ p\) and \(v_ 1\) is the corresponding eigenfunction. The main idea is to compare the corresponding solution with suitable radially symmetric sub and supersolutions of ``product type'' or of ``Barenblatt type''.
