A stochastic analogue of the model of stressed population growth [see \textit{T. G. Hallam} and \textit{Ma Zhien}, J. Math. Biol. 24, 327-339 (1986; Zbl 0606.92022)] is presented. This is a generic model for the effects of toxicants on populations in random environments. The effect of the toxicant is considered as biased time-varying random adjustment to the population's intrinsic growth rate. The aim of the paper is to characterize persistence of the population under stress of the toxicant. Results are compared with those for deterministic models of Hallam and Ma Zhien.
