Theoretical results for the rate of convergence of the finite volume element method for solving selfadjoint elliptic systems are established. It is proved that the convergence factors of this method differ from those of the Galerkin finite element discretizations used in the fast adaptive composite grid methods by a term of order \(h^{1/2}\).
