The authors establish elliptic boundary conditions for the Dirac operator and study its spectrum. They study both local boundary conditions and spectral boundary conditions. They establish the classical results for the realization of the Dirac operator with these boundary conditions using elementary methods by means of a basic estimate and standard results from functional calculus -- they do not use the calculus of elliptic pseudo-differential boundary problems. An essential ingredient is the Lichnerowicz formula which expresses the square of the Dirac operator in terms of the connection (or rough) Laplacian plus a curvature term. They also establish a geometric estimate for the first eigenvalue in terms of the curvature endomorphism if the mean curvature of the boundary is strictly positive.
