The authors consider the Richardson extrapolation and defect correction of the finite element approximation to the solutions of the following simple parabolic integro-differential equation \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} &{\partial u\over\partial t}- \Delta u-\int^t_0\Delta u(x,y,s) ds= f &&\quad\text{in }\Omega\times (0,T];\\ & u=0 &&\quad\text{on }\partial\Omega\times (0,T];\\ & u(x,y,0)= v(x,y) &&\quad\text{in }\Omega,\end{alignedat} \] where \(\Omega\) is a rectangular domain. The authors study higher accuracy methods -- extrapolation and defect correction for the semidiscrete Galerkin approximations to the solutions of the parabolic equations. Global extrapolation and correction approximations of the third order, rather than the pointwise extrapolation results are derived.
