    The paper deals with relaxing schemes to solve nonlinear scalar conservation laws. The author establishes the maximum principle for first-order and second-order relaxation schemes. He obtains optimal bounds on the total variation and \(L^1\) boundedness. The Lipschitz constant of the \(L^1\) continuity in time is shown to be independent of the relaxation parameter and the time discretization step. The total-variation diminishing property for the conserved physical quantity is also proved.
