The simplest fuzzy PI controllers are under investigation. The fuzzy controller is assumed to have two inputs (error and velocity) and one output (incremental control effort). Analytical structures of the simplest fuzzy PI controllers are derived by using two fuzzy sets (negative and positive) on the universe of discourse (UOD) of each normalized input variable and three fuzzy sets (negative, zero and positive) on the UOD of the normalized output variable, triangular membership functions for fuzzification, a rule base containing four control rules, twelve different fuzzy implications, two \(T\)-norms (intersection and algebraic product), two \(T\)-conorms (Lukasiewicz OR and Zadeh OR) and center of area defuzzification method. Next, sufficient conditions for BIBO stability of all fuzzy PI control systems are derived using the well-known small gain theorem. Moreover, it is proved that in an operating linear PI control system if the linear PI controller is replaced by a nonlinear fuzzy PI controller to obtain better control performance, the stability of the resulting nonlinear fuzzy control system remains unaltered.
