Several papers were devoted to spline approximation by quasi-interpolants, starting from the classical one by \textit{C. de Boor} and \textit{G. J. Fix} [J. Approximation Theory 8,19--45 (1973; Zbl 0279.41008)]. The present paper is a contribution to this area. The author investigates quasi-projection operators, quasi-projection being viewed as an extension of quasi-interpolation. Sharp estimates are given in terms of moduli of smoothness for approximation with scaled shift-invariant spaces by means of quasi-projection operators. Special attention is paid to error analysis for approximation in Lipschitz spaces. Quasi-projection operators have many applications to various problems in approximation theory and wavelet analysis; the author indicates the investigation of convergence rates of cascade algorithms, and applications to sampling theory.
