The purpose of this paper is to define a dynamical system as any family of trajectories. Then it is shown that the familiar input/output systems appear as particular representations, and any family of vector time series may be represented by a discrete-time, linear, time-invariant finite-dimensional system if and only if it is linear, shift invariant, and closed in the topology of pointwise convergence.
