Let A be a smooth complex variety and let \(X_ 0,...,X_ n\) be global regular functions on A. Let \(\phi\) be a global, invertible regular function whose value is 1 on Y, the divisor defined by \(X_ 0\), and Z, defined by \(X_ 1...X_ n\). Under these circumstances the cup-product, \(\{\phi |_{A-Z},X_ 1,...,X_ n\}\) extends across Z to a so- called ``Loday symbol'' \(\{\phi,X_ 1,...,X_ n\}\in H_{{\mathcal D}}^{n+1}[A,Y;{\mathbb{Z}}(n+1)]\) in the Deligne-Beilinson cohomology. The author gives a description of the Loday symbol as a Čech cocycle. As a corollary one obtains a proof of Beilinson's formula for the evaluation of the Loday symbol on certain homology cycles.
