This article gives a description of the Newton polytope \(N_{m,n}\) of the exponents in the expansion of the resultant of two polynomials of order m,n resp. by their coefficients \(a_ j,b_ k:\) \(Res(P,Q)=\sum c_{p,q}a^ pb^ q\) with the multi-index notation; \(N_{m,n}=the\) convex hull of those \((p,q)\in {\mathbb{Z}}^{m+n+2}\) such that \(c_{p,q}\neq 0\). A set of inequalities determining \(N_{m,n}\) is given. Lattices of faces of \(N_{m,n}\) are determined by a combinatorial algorithm. The problem arose from the study of location of singularities for a kind of generalized hypergeometric equation associated to a finite set of Laurent polynomials.
