    Let \(K\) be a simplicial set, \(C(K)\) be the integral, normalized chains on \(K\) and \(\Omega\) the loop functor. In this paper the authors provide, in certain cases, a definition of a natural, strictly associative coproduct, the canonical cobar diagonal: \(\Omega C(K)\to\Omega C(K)\otimes\Omega C(K)\). They show the importance and the properties of this definition, they discuss its relationship to the problem of iterating the cobar construction and they compare it to Baues's coproduct on \(\Omega C(K)\).
