A locally finite open covering \(\mathcal{U}=\{U_{j}\}_{j\in J}\) of a metric space \(X\) is good if it satisfies the following: (1) the closure of each element of \(\mathcal{U}\) is compact; (2) every non-empty intersection of finitely many elements of \(\mathcal{U}\) has a Lipschitz strong deformation retraction to a point \(p.\) For given \(n\) and \(D,\) \(v_{0}>0,\) let \(\mathcal{A}(n,D,v_{0})\) denote the set of isometry classes of compact \(n\)-dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature \(\geq-1,\) diameter \(\leq D,\) and volume \(\geq v_{0}.\) The first theorem of the present paper is stated as follows: Let \(M\) be a \(\sigma \)-compact metric space having a good covering \(\mathcal{U}.\) Then \(M\) has the same locally Lipschitz homotopy type as the nerve of \(\mathcal{U}.\) The second theorem asserts that: There exists a positive number \(\epsilon=\epsilon_{n}(D,v_{0})\) such that if \(M,\) \(M^{\prime}\in \mathcal{A}(n,D,v_{0})\) have the Gromov-Hausdorff distance \(d_{GH}(M,M^{\prime})<\epsilon,\) then \(M\) has the same Lipschitz homotopy type as \(M^{\prime}.\) As a direct concequence of the latter theorem we have that the set of Lipschitz homotopy types of Alexandrov spaces in \(\mathcal{A}(n,D,v_{0})\) is finite.
