An Add-In for Microsoft Excel, called RExcel, is described which embeds the statistical R software into the Excel environment by the DCOM (distributed component objects model) technology. It allows to apply R functions using additional menus integrated in the Excel main menu and the cell context menus or entering the commands as text in Excel cells. All R functions are also available from Excel through VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). The DCOM technology allows to run R as a computational component and Excel as a client application on different machines in a network. The problems of complex data type transformations, missing values handling, debugging and the use of R graphics are discussed.
