Let \(X\) be a Kähler space and let \(G\) be a complex reductive group acting holomorphically on \(X\) by holomorphic transformations and such that the maximal compact subgroup \(K\) acts on \(X\) in a Hamiltonian fashion. Under Assumption A (i.e. every component of the moment map \(\mu\) is proper and every path of steepest descent is contained in some compact subset of \(X\)), one obtains a \(K\)-invariant Morse decompositoin of \(X\). The author shows that if in addition Assuption B holds (i.e. every semistable piece is open in its topological closure), then the \(K\)-invariant Morse decomposition and the semistable decomposition coincide. If \(G={\mathbb C}^*\) and \(X\) is a compact Kähler manifold, both Assumptions A and B are fulfilled. The author proves that those assumptions are also fulfilled if \(G={\mathbb C}^*\) and \(X\) is an arbitrary Kähler space. This is done by reducing to the compact case via a \(G\)-equivariant compactification of \(X\) obtained by the technique of symplectic cuts.
