Let \(G/L\to G/K\) be a homogeneous fibration with symmetric fibre and base, where \(G\) is a compact connected semi-simple Lie group and \(L\) has maximal rank in \(G\). Suppose the base space \(G/K\) is isotropy irreducible and the fibre \(K/L\) is simple connected. In this paper, the author investigates the existence of \(G\)-invariant Einstein metrics on \(G/L\) such that the natural projection onto \(G/K\) is a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibres. These spaces can be divided into two types: the fibre \(K/L\) is isotropy irreducible or is the product of two irreducible symmetric spaces. The author classifies all \(G\)-invariant Einstein metrics with totally geodesic fibres of the first type (see Theorem 1.2). For the second case, all such metrics are classified when \(G\) is an exceptional Lie group (see Theorem 1.5). If \(G\) is a classical Lie group, the author classifies all such metrics that are an orthogonal sum of the normal metrics on the fibre and on the base or such that the restriction to the fibre is also Einstein.
